Herbal and Ayurveda-based products used to be a small corner of the beauty aisle. Not anymore. Retail chains stock them, export distributors ask for them early in the conversation, and salon groups are building whole service menus around them. Why? Because people read ingredient lists now. They want plant-based formulas with some genuine tradition behind them, and they can tell when it’s just marketing.

India is where a lot of this happens. There’s centuries of Ayurvedic practice, a deep herb supply base, and plenty of licensed factories, many of which do private label work. The factory develops and produces. You retain the name, package, and sell.

However, what often goes wrong is that the factory you choose can have a significant impact on almost everything. Stability, traceability of documentation, and contracts. Stability, traceability, paperwork, contract terms. Get one wrong and you’ll feel it at scale. So let’s walk through each, and by the end you should be able to judge a manufacturer on what they can show you rather than what they tell you.

Private Label Isn’t What It Used to Be

A while back, private label meant a catalog, your sticker on someone else’s jar, and a minimum order. Done. Many private label makeup manufacturers now offer more than ready-made formulas, providing custom formulation, batch production, filling, packaging coordination and documentation to help beauty brands develop products that fit their target audience and market positioning. Formulation, batch production, filling, packaging coordination, documentation: it’s all handled in one place.

There are two ways to go. You can take a formula the factory already runs and tweak it: a different scent, a thicker or lighter texture, a bit more or less of the active. Or you can have the lab build one from scratch around your brief. If you already know who you’re selling to and what price you need to hit, the custom route usually makes more sense. It costs more at the start, but the formula ends up belonging to you, not to the factory’s catalog.

Color Cosmetics Are Their Own Beast

Makeup isn’t skincare with pigment added. Pigments, binders, and fillers all change wear time and shade accuracy, and a herbal base throws in one more variable.

Shade consistency is where makeup gets tricky. Say your “Rosewood” lipstick comes out slightly off in batch three. Retailers usually spot it before shoppers do, and that’s an awkward call to take. The better private label makeup manufacturers keep strict color-matching routines and know exactly where their pigments come from. Ask them how they hold a shade across batches and how much variation they’ll accept. If they answer straight away with actual numbers, they’ve done this before. If they hedge, that tells you something too.

Know Where Every Herb Came From

Plants vary. Soil, harvest timing, drying method: all of it shifts potency. Serious factories handle this with approved supplier lists, checks on incoming material, and lot-level records.

If you export, traceability gets even more important. Say a distributor reports an issue. Can the factory trace that jar back to its herb lot within a day? If it takes a week, that’s a problem. Heavy metal testing, pesticide screening, and microbial limits should be routine at intake. When a factory treats them as special requests, take that as a signal.

Regulations Change at Every Border

This is where growing brands get stuck most often. India regulates cosmetics under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020, and anything making Ayurvedic drug claims needs AYUSH licensing. The EU requires a safety assessment, a Responsible Person, and CPNP notification. In the US, MoCRA brought facility registration and product listing duties.

A capable manufacturer thinks about this from day one. They can supply ingredient documents, safety data, certificates of analysis, and GMP records. They won’t file everything for you, and honestly, you shouldn’t expect that. What they can do is make your own filings faster and far less painful.

Watch Your Claims, and Your Packaging

It’s tempting to over-claim on herbal products. Words like “treats,” “cures,” or “clinically proven” can push a cosmetic into drug territory or get a listing rejected. A good factory will check your claims against the formula and the testing behind it, even when you’d rather they didn’t.

Packaging also requires special attention. Some herbal creams are better stored in airless pumps, as they oxidize quickly when exposed to air. Oils should be placed in dark glass, as they are sensitive to light. Testing the cream in the packaging intended for sampling is necessary, as a minor defect may be irritating when detected too late – after an order of twenty thousand units has been produced.

Lead Times, Minimums, and Growth

Established brands plan supply differently from startups. You’re watching reorder cycles, seasonal rushes, and what happens when one SKU suddenly takes off.

So ask for real lead times, not the best-case version. What happens if you double an order? Can they reserve capacity for you? This kind of flexibility is a big reason Ayurvedic manufacturers in India suit brands that are moving from regional sales into wider distribution. The formula stays put while the volumes grow, which keeps quality predictable.

Protect Your Formula

Nobody loves reading contracts, but this is where you protect yourself. Get clear answers on formula ownership, exclusivity, and confidentiality. Can the factory sell the same formula to someone else? If you fund custom development, who holds the rights? Is there a non-compete on your key actives?

And ask about plan B. What if a key herb has a rough harvest year? Does the factory keep alternate suppliers or approved substitutes? A partner who’s already thought about that is far safer than one who scrambles after something breaks.

Pick a Partner You Can Grow With

Your manufacturer makes every product that carries your name. When the formulas stay stable and the batches match, you hardly think about them. When they don’t, you hear about it from customers, distributors, and retailers.

Dharmani has focused on herbal and Ayurvedic products for years, so stability, traceability, documentation, and batch consistency are things they already know how to handle.

Don’t just take that on trust. Ask for stability data, a batch trace, and samples from more than one production run, and put the answers next to every other quote you’ve got. The paperwork will tell you who’s ready.
